The movie Green Book, released in 2018, garnered critical acclaim and was nominated for five Oscars, ultimately winning three. The film follows an African-American pianist portrayed by Mahershala Ali, who hires an American doorman played by Viggo Mortensen to accompany him on a concert tour through the racially tense South in the 1960s. The screenplay is based on a true story, with an interesting twist being that Tony Lip's son, the character played by Mortensen, co-wrote the script.

However, the family of Don Shirley, the character played by Ali, was not consulted during the making of the film and expressed dissatisfaction with the portrayal, labeling it as inaccurate.Controversy surrounded Green Book, with critics pointing out issues with the screenplay and the depiction of racism through a white lens. Many felt that the film perpetuated stereotypes and portrayed the black character as the one solving all the white character's problems.
